All about blinds and shutters
From Romans to Venetians, vertical to honeycomb, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the options when it comes to choosing hard window treatments.
Whether used in combination with curtains or as stand-alone treatments, blinds can be a practical solution for a space, keeping sunlight from a TV room or nursery, or blocking the gaze of passersby in a living room, for example.
Based on your reasons for needing blinds or shutters, I can help to determine the right variety for your space, along with the colour and style that would best suit your home. Below are the options included in my blind service, along with their key uses.
Pleated or honeycomb blinds
These trap air within their form, making them a good way to boost insulation properties
When not in use, they compress tightly above the window frame, making them a good option for small spaces
These can also be used for unusual shaped windows, such as half moons in mezzanines
Some varieties can open from either the top or the bottom of the window frame, making them perfect for allowing a view while ensuring privacy
Available in a range of colours and with blockout or sun filtering fabrics
Sunscreen blinds
Sunscreen blinds are great for protecting furniture or artworks from harsh sun, as well as lending light control when spaces get too much glare
These will only provide privacy during the day. If lights are on at night, people will still be able to see into the room
Thinner mesh options will allow a view while still providing sun protection.
Available in a range of colourways
Wooden shutters
Not as common in modern homes but can give a pleasant, farmhouse aesthetic to a home, and can also be great for a holiday home for extra security and privacy when not in use
With adjustable slats, these allow light and heat control in a room. Can be a good way to get ventilation into a space while still keeping small children or pets safe
Can be painted or coated in a protective finish
Slats can be adjustable for allowing sunlight through at different times of the day
Timber-look blinds
Made from a thermoplastic alloy resin, these blinds are very easy to clean and maintain
Great for use in wet areas and heated environments such as kitchens and bathrooms
Gives a pleasant, timber style without the risk of cracking, fading or warping, which can happen if timber isn’t maintained or is subject to extreme temperature and moisture changes
Available in a wide variety of timber tones and textures
Venetian blinds
Venetians come in either aluminium or timber, with 25mm or 50mm slats. Metal is best for wet areas, as timber can warp and bend
Create a beautiful horizontal linear look, with the versatility of allowing for a view in and out, and adjustment options for sunlight levels and privacy needs
There are many colours on the market to suit a wide variety of homes and styles
Venetians are good for light control, ventilation and privacy and can be used for narrow windows
Vertical Blinds
Can be a great way to provide light and privacy control for large, tall windows or sliding doors
Can make ceiling heights feel taller, due to the vertical lines
Often provide interesting light patterns in an open space as they sway in the breeze
Come in a wide variety of colours and textures
Roman Blinds
Create a more traditional aesthetic in a space and can be customised to match with wallpapers or interior design themes
Provide good insulation for windows and doors
A great alternative for including fabric patterns and colours without requiring as much fabric as curtains
A clean, stylish look that can be finished with a chain or rope control. Black-out linings are also available
