Merino Lodge

Happily, the owner of this lodge had used my services some 25 years earlier for a private home, and shared that I was the first person she contacted when considering the interiors of this expansive lodge in Ōmarama.

  • Natural schist stone

  • Recycled timber elements

  • Timeless pastoral character

  • Luxurious soft furnishings

Good design has to tell a story. It has to stop people, and it has to make them wonder. Good design is a conversation.
— Zahid Sardar

Located in the heart of dark sky country, the lodge called for a bespoke, rural ambience, which was achieved through a combination of recycled timber, barn-like exposed rafters, robust schist walls and traditional-style timber door frames, as well as some touches of luxury in the soft furnishings.

“detailing that speaks to the work done in the environment beyond the front doors”

Working with the client’s ideas for the design, we enhanced the spaces with detailing that speaks to the work done in the environment beyond the front doors, using shearing implements repurposed as door handles and wool bale stencils for the naming of rooms.

We then incorporated the client’s extensive art collection into the interiors, using spotlights down the hallway to create a gallery-like space. Guest rooms each feature distinctive bedding patterning and colourways for a lush sense of uniqueness.
