Retro in Ōamaru

Presented with an Art Deco home and clients with a passion for antiques, this restoration project was something of a dream. Through getting to know the clients, I was able to use their interests as a basis for the design, creating a clear vision of what makes the house a haven for them.

  • Preservation of past design with modern conveniences

  • Integration of collected antiques and objets d’art

  • Kitchen, bathroom, laundry updates

When friends enter a home, they sense its personality and character, the family’s style of living – these elements make a house come alive with a sense of identity, a sense of energy, enthusiasm, and warmth, declaring, “This is who we are; this is how we live.

Treading the line between providing modern amenities and staying true to the original style of the home, I ensured new elements added to the existing charm.

Retaining the original hardwood floors and Art Deco fireplaces, adding William Morris wallpapers alongside the homeowner’s antique furnishings and objets d’art completed the look.

For modern-day usability, a new kitchen was installed complete with a carrara marble splashback and an adjoining scullery with a butler’s sink and traditional-style open shelving. The laundry space and bathrooms were also renovated, with textured tiling chosen to add that much-loved Art Deco touch.
